Cream paper over board with black cloth overlay on the spine; flaked gilt titles on spine; red crosshatched designs on boards. 34 pp 8vo square. This is a book of pictorial satire or caricature and its use in journalism. Daumier was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. A prolific draftsman, he was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on the behavior of his countrymen and using their weaknesses to draw them as ugly and grotesque, raising the wrath of the upper classes. A clean very presentable copy.
