About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1859. First edition. Leather bound. Good +. viii, 695 p. 22 cm. 44 b&w illustrations by Phiz. Half green leather with marbled boards. Matching marbled endpapers and text block edge. Wear to boards and corners and a bit of tearing in leather at spine head. Ink signature and label of former owner in front endpapers.

The character of Dunn appears to be based on that of John Sadleir, the Irish politician and financier. Sadleir, who eventually fell into ruin and committed suicide on Hampstead Heath, also provides the basis for the character of Mr. Merdle in Dickens' Little Dorrit. Artist Hablot Knight Browne, known as "Phiz," is best remembered for illustrating the novels of Dickens.
