About This Item
New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1900. Hardcover. Illustrations by B. West Clinedinst and C.D. Farrand. Small 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering and decorations, pictorial dust jacket. xvii, 410pp, (4pp ads). Top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, 8 full-page called-for plates, numerous small line drawings. Near fine/very good. Minor jacket edgewear. Outstandingly tight 'n' bright first illustrated edition of this novel set in upstate New York. The only novel penned by this banker (1846-98), it was first published posthumously in 1898 after his death from tuberculosis at age 52 and became an 1899 bestseller, justifying this illustrated edition soon after. Thanks to the rarely-present jacket the book itself is uncannily sharp, with all gilt bright and fresh. Quite scarce as such.
