About This Item

n.p.: n.p., [190-?]. A scarce document that includes the background, beliefs and purpose, Constitution, rules and regulations of the Worlds Comrades, a Tribe, a freethought utopian group, that according to the front wrapper was founded by a William Hetrick. The first half of the document contains a lengthy message from Hetrick on the purpose :

"I proclaim the truth as I have found it, by a life time of calm and fearless thought, and earnestly endeavor to arouse the dormant energies of human beings to a realization of their only refuge from sorrow, which is in the power and vastness of their understanding and the universal freedom of their thoughts, without which no man can have true liberty among his fellow beings or hold dominion over circumstances, or guide his course as he drifts toward the unknown realms of the future on the might current of condition.

And to expose the deceptions of those crafty and cunning monsters the theologians, politicians, and merchants, who have from time immemorial cast shadows before the eyes of men, in order that they might profit by the confusion and misfortunes of their fellow beings.

And to offer a plan whereby all who will may know the truth, enjoy just and equal liberty peace and comfort, and live in harmony with their fellow beings."

The remainder of the document details the Beliefs and Purpose, Constitution, and Rules and Regulations, which is enumerated over 221 parts.

An OCLC record for a 1938 edition of the Constitution includes the following contradictory information: "This proclamation of the existence of the World's Comrades, a tribe, and the beliefs and purpose of the said tribe, proclaimed by Jean Civilee of Madison, N.C., founder of the said tribe, for and in behalf of the members of the said tribe, and of all others who may become members of the said tribe ..." Besides the 1938 copyright, it also states, "copyrighted in U.S.A. May 13, 1907, by Jean Civilee, Lewiston, Idaho" (p. 2). We could find no information on Worlds Comrades, a Tribe and nothing substantive about either William Hetrick or Jean Civilee. Regardless, the Worlds Comrades would be a worthy subject for anyone interested in Utopian, New Thought, Freethought, and New Religious movements.

Side-stapled wrappers (6 " x 8 ¾"), 48 p. Copyright stamp to front wrapper, some oxidizing to staples, corners bumped; a few editorial marks to the front cover and internally. One copy of this pamphlet in OCLC at the Univ. of Michigan; a 1938 edition of the Constitution attributed to a Jean Civilee is found at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. Scarce.
