The book features David Hillyard, a middle-aged American who for twenty years has been secretly obsessed by the memory of an atrocity committed by German forces on the Greek Island of Sestos during WWII. Though denying he has ever been there, Hillyard visits the island to try to rid himself of his nightmare memories only to find the islanders openly hostile and threatening and his life suddenly in danger.
