About This Item
Paris: Fasquelle, 1918. First Edition. Softcover. Spine and pages darkened, some nicks and wear to extremities, but overall a very nice copy. Very Good to Near Fine.. First Edition. Softcover. Trade edition. Signed & inscribed by Guitry in March 1918 to Edmond Roze, theatre impresario and producer of this play. An extraordinarily NICE ASSOCIATION for this play. Also offered for sale along with the inscribed French trade edition is a hardcover English Version Translated by H. Granville Barker and published by Putnam in 1921. 8vo, green cloth, gilt-stamped. Very good. The first performance of the play occurred at the Vaudeville Theatre in Paris in February 1918. It was translated into English and ran on Broadway during 1920 and 1921. The French version was later made into a film in 1951, written and directed by Guitry. The title character of the play is based on Jean-Gaspard Deburau, who was a real mime in the 1830s and whose unforgettable character was at the center of the film LES ENFANTS DE PARADIS (THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE). PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings, unless we specifically note otherwise. All our dust jackets are protected in clear mylar covers.
