About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood & Co, 1877. First Edition. Flexible boards. Near fine. 12mo, 255pp. First state, per BAL, with "was" for "so" on line 16, p. 65. A fresh, lovely copy in the publisher's decorative brown cloth over flexible boards. Edges stained red. Faintest rubbing to the spine ends, two tiny chips to the rear free endpaper, and the front inner hinge has very thin cracks at the edges, though it remains sound and intact. A fragile book, prone to wear, this is an exceptionally nice example, near fine indeed. Deephaven was Jewett's first book, and was printed in an edition of 1280 coipes. A lifelong resident of South Berwick, Maine, Jewett was a popular novelist in her time, though her star faded somewhat in the 20th century. Recently, feminist literary critics have revived interest in Jewett's novels, which portray female characters in a complex and three-dimensional manner, uncommon at the time. A pleasing copy of this important debut novel, rare in this condition. Wright 2975, BAL 10871.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
