About This Item

Glasgow: R. Urie, 1752. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First separate printing of this work after its original 1595 edition; there were a number of editions of Sidney's 'The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia' published in the 17th Century that apparently had the Apology for Poetry appended to them, and in the early 18th Century there are a number of editions of the Works of Philip Sidney that include publication of the Defense, but as far as separate printings, there are none between 1595 and 1752. 12mo, later (early 20th C.) half maroon leather gilt and brown cloth boards, 106 pp., (2 pp). Very good. Considered one of the most important literary critical works of the English Renaissance, this was composed in approximately 1579 and published after Sidney's death. RARE.
