Folio approximately 375 x 240 mm, 14¾ x 9½ inches, VOLUME 1, 24 hand coloured plates, engraved vignette to title page, pages: [8], [4],1-104; including list of plates. VOLUME 2, 6 hand coloured plates, pages: [4], 1-21, [1], including list of plates, bound in quarter green cloth, with part of gilt lettered leather label to spine, marbled paper boards. Binding rubbed and worn, hinges of spine cracked and repaired, marbled covers rubbed and scuffed, corners worn with board showing, shelf wear to edges with loss of marbled paper, 1 colour plate has pale browning to margins not affecting image, pastedowns and endpapers a little dusty and with light browning, light foxing to prelims, a little pale foxing to a few plates, the pink list of plates to Volume 2 has pale offset to pages either side, a few margins slightly dusty with occasional small spot, otherwise a very good copy, no loose pages, in worn binding. Georg Franz Hoffmann was a German botanist and lichenologist, After graduating from the University of Erlangen in 1786, he worked there between 1787 and 1792 as a professor of botany. Between 1792 and 1803 he was Head of the Botany Department and Director of the Botanical Garden of Göttingen University. Already a famous botanist, in particular for his work on lichens, he settled in Moscow in January 1804 and directed the Department of Botany at the University of Moscow as well as the Botanical Garden. London: James Nelson & Co, 1860 A very good copy of the 3rd edition with 42 hand coloured plates. This copy has been rebound in plain buckram cloth with gilt titles to spine, and the endpapers have been replaced. The binding is sound and clean with some darkening to the spine and light corner wear. Contents: half title; title; contents and plate listings xii; introduction 2pp; text pp 3-211 with 42 plates; index pp 212-215. All the plates have tissue guards. Contents are in very good clean condition. The guard to plate 1 is torn and the bottom part is missing. Plate 13 has a wide gutter so the side edge is trimmed although the plant image is complete. There is some marking to the verso of p 215 (blank) and the occasional light mark or offsetting from the plates. The plates are clean and bright with the occasional stray paint spot or light mark.

Includes 21 exotic species of showy orchids (Cattleya, Anguloa, Cypripedium, Dendrobium, Rhyncholaelia, Trichopilia, Cycnoches, Acanthephippium, etc.), as well as peony, gardenia, fire lily, bellflower, passionfruit, desert rose, indigo, balsam, snake gourd, speedwell, primrose, etc.
The Botanical Register was launched by Sydenham Edwards in 1815 following his departure as main illustrator to William Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Edwards edited the magazine and drew most of the plates in 14 volumes until his death in 1828. John Lindley then took over as editor on a further 19 volumes under the title Edwards's Botanical Register from 1829 to 1847. By 1832, Miss Drake had become the main illustrator of the magazine, and she would go on to draw over 1,000 plates.
