About This Item

1831. WRITTEN, DRAWN AND LITHOGRAPHED BY WOMEN JARRY DE MANCY, Adele and Jean-Francois LE BRETON. Le Dessin d'Apres, Nature et sans Maitre, suivant la Methode du Professeur le Breton, consistant a faire Dessiner d'Apres Nature, des la Premiere Lecon, par Mme Jarry de Mancy, Nee Adele le Breton, Peintre et Professeur... [4], iv, 107, [1] pp. Illustrated with 33 full-page lithograph plates numbered 1-32 plus 8bis, signed Mme. Marchand after Mme. Jarry de Mancy. 2 Volumes Folio, bound in contemporary half morocco. Paris: Chez l'Auteur 1830. First edition. A female artist's treatise on her famous father's drawing method, illustrated with her own drawings lithographed by another female artist. Le Breton (1761-1838) studied under David in Paris, where his eponymous drawing method was so sought after that he continued giving lessons to at least one imprisoned student during the Reign of Terror ("Jean-Francois Le Breton," in Réunion des sociétés des beaux-arts des départements a la Sorbonne, 1885, p. 435). Adele Jarry de Mancy (1794-1854), Le Breton's daughter and pupil, was a distinguished member of the Athenée des Arts de Paris. She published two of Le Breton's treatises, of which this is the second. More than the earlier Traité de perspective simplifiée linéaire (1828), this drawing manual emphasizes methods for capturing the human form: in movement, portraiture, and features including ears, hands, and noses. Three of the 33 lithographs were executed in a soft bistre, showing two views of a castle; stages in a portrait of a woman; and a (conservatively rendered) male nude. Of the greatest rarity. Of the first edition of 1830, only the Getty copy is recorded on OCLC and of the 1831 issue, copies at Stanford and the National Gallery in the US. The text volume with marginal staining, and foxing, presumably caused by the poor quality of the paper. Marginal waterstains to the majority of the plates. Wear to the bindings, but they are sound. Despite the condition issues, a desirable object, which has been priced taking the condition into account.
