Uncommon for a copy of this work in such a lovely condition.With the tipped in price note and the acquisition details on a pink slip of paper as called for.Norman Douglas wrote this work as a reply to D.H Lawrence's attack on Maurice Magnus in his introduction to 'Memoirs of the Foreign Legion'. Douglas and Lawrence were both friends of Magnus, and Douglas was his literary executor. Lawrence's introduction to the memoir was used to sell the book, but Douglas felt he had maligned his dear friend. This feud between Douglas and Lawrence was long-running and this publication was the first foray into the public sphere of the voicing of Douglas' distaste. Lawrence's attack on American travel writer Maurice Magnus, including a signed letter from Douglas to sculptor John Tweed. Flat signed to the title page 'to his friend John Tweed from Norman Douglas, October 1925'. Loosely inserted is a signed letter from Douglas to Tweed, a prominent Scottish sculptor, bearing the same date, in which Douglas states 'you have probably forgotten my existence, but if you ever come here again, I will try to remind you of it'. He discusses his son, Archie, who he claims is 'interested himself in the marble industry with a view to taking it up seriously'.
