Translated from the Russian by Carl R. Proffer.
After a long period of suppression, Mikhail Bulgakov was belatedly discovered in the west with the posthumous publication of his novel, "The Master And The Margarita", in 1967. This collection of short stories will unquestionably add to his already brilliant reputation. Originally printed in 1925, it virtually marked Bulgakov's last appearance in print until after Stalin's death. In the this eponymous anthology, is a straightforward satire of Soviet bureaucracy, while The Fala Eggs (1924), published in this same collection, directly mocks the Bolshevik regime Lenin created. In this tale, Professor Persikov, bearing more than a passing resemblance to Lenin, exposes two eggs to an experimental red4 light ray. The eggs expand enormously and hatch into a pair of vast serpents that devour Persikov and rampage through Moscow. Also in this collection are: "No 13. The Elpit-Rabkommun Building", "A Chinese Tale", "The Adventures of Chichikov", " A Treatise on Housing", "Psalm", "Four Portraits", "Moonshine Lake", "The Raid", and "The Crimson Island".
