Gilt edges, Blue, marbled cover boards (with endpapers to match), gilt decorations and title on spine, and leather corner accents and spine. Previous owner's bookplate on front endpaper. Some splits at gutter, and the leather at spine is beginning to peel back (see image). Pages have some finger print smudges and just a touch of tanning from age. This volume would be an excellent addition to any collector's library, and although not entirely necessary, would be quite spectacular once rebound. Record # 32509

Frontispiece with tissue guard in each volume (1 color); maps, photogravures with tissue guards, black & white photo-reproductions throughout both volumes. Publisher's black morocco with gilt decoration, ruling & lettering; TEG; marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to joints; some shelfwear), else a near fine set in a striking binding. First published in 1902, "... the edition now offered has been thoroughly revised, enlarged, and brought up to date, with the edition of a number of new and interesting illustrations." - Preface. This work is still considered an important authoritative source today. Gardner F. Williams (1842 - 1922) was an American mining engineer and author, and the first properly trained mining engineer to be appointed in South Africa. Gardner grew up in the Californian mining camps of Sierra and Yuba counties, surrounded by mining activity, graduating with a BA and MA from University of California at Berkeley. Beginning in 1887, Williams managed De Beers Consolidated Mines for 18 years under the founder, Cecil Rhodes.
