Translated from the French by Hamish Miles. Handsome binding in remarkably good condition, in purple watered silk cloth, gilt imprinted title/author on front and spine, very bright on front, less so on spine. Very clean, totally unmarked, slight rubbing to extremities. Rough cut on lower edge and fore edge. Tight, solid and square. Bookplate on paste-down. Interior very clean, no markings, no tears. Frontis: Benjamin Disraeli from a sketch of the author of "Vivian Grey" by Daniel Maclise, R.A. Seven plates in brown tones. Andre Maurois, b. 1885, d. 1967 (pen name of Emil Herzog), French biographer, novelist and essayist wrote this biography of Benjamin Disraeli, b.1804, d.1881, English statesman and novelist, twice Prime Minister of Great Britain, The First Earl of Beaconsfield. He was a staunch advocate of "Tory democracy", and the power and glory of the British Empire, such as it was. xiii + 378 pages, indexed. 6 x 9 inches. D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1928.
