London: Methuen and Co. , 1893. In two volumes. [8] 216; [6] 218-441pp, [16]. Original publisher's blue cloth boards lettered in gilt. Slightly shaken, all edges shelf-worn and bumped, with evidence of early library plates being removed from the front boards. A little toned throughout, fore and bottom edge uncut. Decorative endpapers, fore and bottom edge untrimmed. Slightly toned throughout, with a split in the page block at pp.328/329, Vol II. The second edition, in two volumes as issued, of E. F. Benson's highly acclaimed debut novel, which allowed him to embark on a comfortable and abundant writing career. E. F. Benson (1867-1940) was an extremely prolific English writer, completing over fifty novels, four novel series, short stories, plays, biographies, and other non-fiction works on subjects as varied as golf and grave digging. His last work, his third autobiography, was delivered to his publisher just ten days before his death. . Second edition. 8vo.
