She earned her undergraduate degree in women's studies in 1983, and a master's degree in public health from University of California, Berkeley in 1986. She embarked on a career as a consultant in a wide range of public health contexts, and co-authored academic articles published in the Journal of Public Health Policy and the Health Education Quarterly.
