A fascinating American novel set during the American Civil War in New Orleans. Written by nineteenth-century American novelist George Washington Cable, known in particular for his realistic portrayals of Creole life in Louisiana. He was an incredibly influential Southern novelist from the United States. He is also the author of noted works Old Creole Days (1879) and The Grandissimes: A Story of Creole Life (1880). The first UK edition of this work, originally published in the Untied States in 1882. Complete in two volumes.Containing a previous owner's ink signature to the front blank of each volume. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some light shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spines and extremities.
