About This Item

Albany, NY: C. Van Benthuysen, 1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Occasional very minor tear or stain but quite clean and whole, firmly bound. Near Fine. Original gilt-lettered brown cloth (6" x 9-1/4") rebacked with later black cloth. Complete with 2 folding maps and 46 plates, most folding. There is a very large folding hand-colored map of the state of New York and a smaller folding map of the cities of New York and Brooklyn showing the routes of the horse railroads. The plates depict bridges, coal-burning locomotives, tunnels, etc., including profile maps of railroad routes. Issued by the New York Board of Railroad Commissioners, this volume is a veritable treasure trove of images related to mid-19th century railroadiana.
