About This Item
1930. Signed. (DUVEEN, Joseph). Dreyfus Collection. Florence: Privately Printed, 1930. Large folio (19 by 26 inches), original tan cloth, uncut. $6000.Limited first edition, one of only 24 copies, with 28 stunning large tipped-in photographs of Renaissance sculpture from the Gustave Dreufus collection, inscribed by legendary art dealer Joseph Duveen to philanthropist and art collector Marshall Field (grandson of the founder of the department store), ""To Mr. Marshall Field with best wishes Joseph Duveen. New York Jany 31/31.""Duveen was one of the great art dealers of the early 20th century, making his fortune by pairing American millionaires with the artworks they so keenly wanted. He published this work to showcase the Dreyfus collection which he had recently acquired for $4.5 million dollars, an enormous fortune at the time. A number of these works are now owned by the National Gallery of Art; others are at the Frick and the Fogg art museums. Signed on the limitation page by the printer, this copy is unnumbered. The recipient of this copy, Marshall Field, was a collector and philanthropist who bought works from Duveen. Plates fine; some wear to cloth boards. An exceptional production.
