One of my favorite sea stories. A fantasy tale of a man who in effort to simply give up and die allows himself to drift out to sea in a small boat. He passes out due to the expected exposure, but comes to in the Sargasso Sea where every derelict ship eventually winds up, and discovers other people have wound up there too. The castaways make their life among the conglomeration of floating, and barely floating, ships that have all jammed together in the center of the Sargasso Sea for centuries.
I personally found this book to be a delight because I have always been interested in maritime history, old ships, and antique material culture, so this kind of fantastic life would actually appeal to me.
Our hero does fall into the life of a castaway on an island made up of hundreds of derelict ships and fits into the unusual society of the inhabitants there; and even finds a love interest in his new home. But gradually the charm wears off and he begins to think in different ways which starts to cause friction.
An overall delightful book with an imaginitive setting. If strange legends of the sea, interesting discoveries, and poignant affairs of the heart appeal then this would likely be a favorite of yours too.
