New York: The Hampton Publishing Co. distributed by William Morrow and Company, 1944. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Tan cloth stamped in red. Small bookstore label on rear pastedown and owner decorative bookplate on front pastedown, very faint stain on front board with spine mildly cocked, a very good copy in a very good dust jacket with extremities chipped and torn with minimal loss, spine lightly sunned. Basis for the epic western, ostensibly directed by King Vidor but intensely micromanaged by producer David Selznick, who hoped to create a successor to his masterpiece Gone With the Wind. The film, dubbed "Lust in the Dust" by film wags, featured Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotton, Jennifer Jones, Lionel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, Orson Welles, Butterfly McQueen and many others. Manufactured during wartime.
