Description

London: George Routledge and Sons, 1922. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. Folio. Full black blind-ruled morocco with gilt lettering, rules, raised bands. xi, 382pp; vii, 387pp. Top edges gilt. Captioned tissue guarded color frontispieces, extensive illustrations. Very good. Though internally both volumes are tight and bright and fine, the volume I hinges are a tad worn but strong; head and tail of both spines a bit edge chipped and outer tips of both volume a bit bumped. Exceptionally handsome first edition of this classic in its field, in lovely morocco binding with bright gilt. Volume I focuses mostly on the "Woodwork" portion of the title (with chapters such as "The Plan of the Early Tudor House," "The Development of the English Timber Roof," "Gothic Woodwork and Colour Decoration," "Timber Houses, Porches and Doors," "The English Staircase," "Wood Panellings and Mantels," "Bedsteads and Their Development"), while Volume II focuses on the "Furniture" portion (with chapters such as "The Development of the Chest and Standing Cupboard," "The Progression of English Oak Tables," "The Development of the English Oak Chair," "Walnut Chairs from 1660 to 1700," "English Marquetrie," "Domestic Clocks," "English Lacquer Work"). An all-around superb set and fairly scarce, unlike the common single-volume Waverly Book Company reprint edition.
