Until very recently the primacy of Sumerian civilization over its neighbors to the east has been taken for granted, at least in part because excavations in southern Babylonia during the early decades of the twentieth century provided such a wealth of detail on Sumer, in contrast to our meager knowledge of Elam and Anshan.
