This book was written partly in response to a desire expressed by many friends to have a book that they could read without a background of technical knowledge. It is essentially a popularization of my book Submarine Geology, avoiding discussion of complicated and technical aspects. Another purpose in writing the book was to show the fun as well as the tribulations in trying to develop a new field of science. When I started out 40 years ago, I though of myself as being virtually the only geologist studying the ocean floor. I have learned since then that there had previously been various other attempts, some of the long before I got started. Just recently I ran across a book by French geologist, M. Deleese, entitled Lithologie du Fond des Mers (The Rocks of teh Sea Bottom) , which was published in 1866. It covered many of the same field as my early work, but seems to have got lost, like so many other pioneer attempts. Three others I know of have as well. Someone has always planted the flag ahead of you. I have been fortunate, however, n having been surrounded for the past twenty years by specialists in all branches of the study of the seam so that I have learned from them and, to considerable extent, with them. In writing this book I have drawn freely in various chapters both from their pioneering work and from their advice. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author .
