Burroughs, of course, created one of the most iconic heroes in the history of North American writing. Few fictional characters hold as firm a place in our culture as Tarzan. His well-received debut in a magazine story in 1912 led to a book-length appearance in Tarzan of the Apes and its sequel, The Return of Tarzan. The two books make up a single extended narrative, taking Tarzan from his earliest days as an orphaned child in the jungles of West Africa. The first Tarzan movie was in 1918, directed by Scott Sidney and starring Elmo Lincoln, Enid Markey, True Boardman, Kathleen Kirkham and others. Recently filmed was The Legend of Tarzan, directed by David Yates in 2016 and starring Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, and a host of others.
