London England: Adam and Charles Black, 1944. Hardback. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. Message to previous owner to inside cover. Shelf wear to edges of D/J. Browning to spine of D/J. Forty-Sixth Thousand. At the age of thirty r so Albert Schweitzer had achieved an international reputation as a theologian, a philosopher and a musician. Then, alread a Doctor of Theology and a Doctor of Philosophy, he added to his qualificiations a Doctorate of Medicine, renounced an unbounded academic futre in Europe, set out for Africa and there built a hospital with money collected through his organ recitals and his books and from his friends. This is the story of the founding of the hospital on the edge of the primeval forest, at Lambarene, near the mouth of the River Ogowe in West Equatorial Africa. it has become a classic of its kind because of its burning sincerity, its understanding of the primitive mind, its humour, the triumphs and tragedies of the adventure, and above all because the personality of one of the most remarkable figures of modern times is reflected so vividly in his writing. Illustrated with sixteen photographs. 180 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.). 11th Impression.
