Philae is an island located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an important Egyptian temple complex. These rapids and the surrounding area have been variously flooded since the initial construction of the Aswan Low Dam circa 1898-1902. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project in the 1970s. Herein, Loti discusses the lose of the Ancient Egyptian temples. and gives us an admiable travelog, One critic noted: "Pierre Loti remains, in the mechanism of style and cadence, one of the most original and most perfect French writers of the second half of the 19th century."
