Description

University of Texas Press, 1997. 1st American Edition 34th printing. Soft cover. As New/No Jacket Issued. B&W era photos; B&W maps; artifact photos. CONDITION: UNREAD, but not quite perfect, 1997 University of Texas paperback, first American edition, 3rd printing. Problems: 2-3 tiny impression marks to front cover at corner and . . . THIS: I am told that at one time UTP designated their remainder books as "damaged" and that's what is stamped on the bottom edges of the book. It is not, however, damaged in any way. Odd, eh? B&W era photos, art reproductions, and maps throughout. CONTENT: The rich panorama of ancient Egyptian mythology has survived through tomb paintings, temple inscriptions, and papyri. This account begins with the creation legends of Heliopolis, Memphis, and Hermopolis and illustrates the intellectual struggles of the Egyptians to explain the beginning of the world. The myths that follow range from stories about the gods-the murder of Osiris and vengeance of Horus, Isis and the seven scorpions, Sakhmet and the virtual slaughter of mankind-to fables such as the Shipwrecked Sailor and the Enchanted Island. Through these delightful and often amusing tales, we can appreciate more fully the beliefs and imagination of the ancient Egyptians.
