First printing of this true story of the first Chinese bullfighter, told with vibrant prose and illustrations by Allen Say. Allen Say, born in Yokohama, Japan in 1937, dreamed of becoming an artist from a young age. Before entering the world of children's book illustration, Say worked as a sign-painter and as a photographer, his skills behind the lens landing him a spot in the military newspaper STARS AND STRIPES. He illustrated his first children's book in 1972, and has earned a Caldecott Medal and a Caldecott Honor, among other accolades; Say's work is often based on personal experiences or the stories of family members, and his illustrations are noted for merging "the real and the surreal in his books, using photographs, pen-and-ink sketches, and watercolor paintings to illustrate them" (Oregon Encyclopedia). 10.25'' x 8.75''. "Say's subtle watercolor shadings and the details in the fine lines of these illustrations capture the power and the sensitivity of this story of a man who learns that to become someone beyond his current self, he must first truly be himself." School Library Journal
