Exceedingly rare Venezuelan poem, printed in Caracas. 1839. Caracas. Imprenta de A. Damiron. In 8vo (192 mm x 123 mm). 1 [blank] + 8 ff. + vii + 1 ff. + 93. Later half calf, spine tooled in gilt. A fine copy, marginal soiling to a few pages, wide margins and strong impression; virtually flawless. Apparently first edition. Venezuelan early imprints are, for lack of a better word, rare; only a few examples of some works are found in the major libraries, not to mention a poem in such an elegant edition. The printer was responsible as well for the Geografía general para el uso de la juventud de Venezuela printed in 1833-37. It begins with an authorization from Martin Tovar and follows with a list of subscribers; a curiosity which allows us to learn who would order the poem in the first half of the 19th century, or the post-colonial Venezuela.

1800 1ed Vancouver Voyage to North Pacific Canada Alaska Illustrated FrenchRare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!
In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published at the turn of the century, both in English and French, and is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest. This 1800 first French edition includes impressive full-page views of Vancouver's discoveries, including an impressive engraving of Mount Rainier. Perhaps Cowan's perspective is the most telling:
"This work is superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period."
According to Howes, of all modern expeditions to the Pacific, Vancouver's is one of the most important. In this work Vancouver also describes Alaskan and Canadian natives, nautical and astronomical… Read More

He lived for some years among the Indians, and, on occasion, acted as parish priest or professor of philosophy. His book, published after his return, caused a great sensation, for it was the first to give the world a description of the vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities. The work was translated into French, Dutch, and German, but its purpose was to urge the English to seize the Spanish territories in the New World." Scranton, PA: J. A. Clark, Publisher, 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. 236pp. Later blue cloth lettered in gold on the spine panel, original wrappers preserved. With twenty-three large, cabinet-size photographs by William H. Schurch. Originally published in parts, the work was supposed to include fifteen issues but only ten were published. According to the publisher's advertisement on the wrappers, each part contained two large photographic views (which retailed for $1 when sold separately.) Laid in are several sheets of paper, probably contemporary, with a hand-written index to the text, including a complete list of the photographs, which might indicate this copy was bound with twenty-three rather than twenty-five or twenty-six photographs as in some other copies. Among the chapters included are Colonel Zebulon Butler in Command, The Pennamite War, The Ship-Building Era, Coal -- Its Origin and Formation, Colliery -- Incidents in and around Coal-Mines, Joseph H. Scranton, Delaware and Hudson Canal…
