About This Item

Ontario: P.D Meany Company Inc.. Very Good/Very Good. 1973. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0333147480 Dust jacket complete, unclipped, tiny closed tear. Green cloth with gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. xvi, 149 pages clean and tight. The essays in this book were given as papers at the Third International Conference on Elizabethan Theatre, held at the University of Waterloo from July 27 to July 31, 1970. The general theme of the conference was "Theatre and Society" and, in varying degrees, the papers in this book, Elizabethan Theatre III, show how society influenced the drama of its time. As in Volumes I and II, however, most of them also show an implicit or explicit awareness of the structures of the theatres of the period, and an awareness of the people who worked in them. Together with its two predecessors, Volume III adds to our scholarly knowledge, reassesses earlier scholarly conclusions, and exemplifies the variety and scope of the research which is being carried out on the subject of the Elizabethan theatre. The three volumes, in fact, add up to an impressively substantial contribution to our understanding of the theatres for which Shakespeare and his fellow dramatists worked. It is hoped that more will follow. The eminent contributors to this volume are: Herbert Berry, University of Saskatchewan; W. R. Gair, University of New Brunswick; George R. Kernodle, University of Arkansas; T. J. King, The City College of the City University of New York; J. A. Lavin, University of British Columbia; John Lawlor, University of Keele; Clifford Leech, University of Toronto; and Glynne Wickham, University of Bristol. The book has been edited by David Galloway, Director of the Conference and Professor and Head of the Department of English, University of New Brunswick. .
