Shows a distinct MUSTY ODOR. Else, Very Good+ to Near Fine in Very Good Slipcase: The Book shows very light rubbing along the outside edges of the backstrip; foxing to the fore-edge and bottom edge; former owner's florid autograph at the front free endpaper; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. A handsome nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing the mildest wear, an unobtrusive cosmetic flaw, and the signature - and the unfortunate musty odor (but no signs of exposure to moisture except perhaps the foxing). Bright and clean. Corners sharp. Flawed, but in overall appearance, close to 'As New'. The Slipcase's open corners are just starting to slip; the panels show foxing and faint soiling. the heel of the closed end is starting to split. Shows some problems, but remains functional and not unattractive. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. 11.25 x 7.5 x 3 inches). xiii, 883 pageS. Notes, Refeneces. Index. Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente or Girolamo Fabrizi d'Acquapendente, (1533 1619) was a pioneering anatomist and surgeon known in medical science as "The Father of Embryology." In 1594 he revolutionized the teaching of anatomy when he designed the first permanent theater for public anatomical dissections. By dissecting animals, Fabricius investigated the formation of the fetus, the structure of the esophagus, stomach and intestines, and the peculiarities of the eye, the ear, and the larynx. The Bursa of Fabricius (the site of hematopoiesis in birds) is named after Fabricius. A manuscript entitled De Formatione Ovi et Pulli, found among his lecture notes after his death, was published in 1621. It contains the first description of the bursa.
