About This Item

Anchor. Softcover. Very Good. Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China" (ISBN: 9780307456700): "Empress Dowager Cixi" provides a detailed and revealing portrait of one of the most powerful women in Chinese history. Author Jung Chang explores the life and reign of Empress Dowager Cixi, who played a pivotal role in the transformation of China during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book unravels the complexities of her rise to power, her political maneuvering, and her impact on the modernization of China. Drawing from extensive research and historical records, Jung Chang presents a nuanced and comprehensive biography that challenges conventional narratives about Cixi's rule. This biography offers a fresh perspective on a remarkable woman who left an enduring legacy on China's history. Crisp, clean, unread book with some shelfwear/edgewear. May have remainder marks, often with a black dot or similar mark, to the top or bottom edge of the book.

Synopsis

JUNG CHANG was born in Sichuan Province, China, in 1952. She was a Red Guard briefly at the age of fourteen and then worked as a peasant, a "barefoot doctor," a steelworker, and an electrician before becoming an English-language student and, later, an assistant lecturer at Sichuan University. She left China for Britain in 1978 and was subsequently awarded a scholarship by York University, where she obtained a PhD in linguistics in 1982, the first person from the People's Republic of China to receive a doctorate from a British university.
