In 1978, when Edward Said published Orientalism, he argued that, far from being shaped by disinterested scholarship, Orientalism as "a mode of discourse" corroborated by "supporting institutions, vocabulary, scholarship, imagery, doctrines" was largely a self-referential system, developed in conjunction with Western imperialism for which it served important functions (Said, 1978: 2).
