About This Item

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1945. First edition. Fine Binding. Very Good Indeed. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition, third impression of this illustrated social history of England by G.M. Trevelyan, handsomely bound in half calf by Morrell. A fascinating work of the social history of England by G.M. Trevelyan, from Chaucer's England through the nineteenth century. The first edition, third impression of this work. Containing folding maps in colour to the pastedowns and free-endpapers, as well as numerous in-text illustrations. Social history, as a subject, focuses on the everyday life of individuals in a particular area. It began emerging as a field arguably with Eileen Power's work, Medieval People (1924) and has since worked to highlight the lives of underrepresented individuals throughout history. Indeed this work has been dedicated to Eileen Power. George M. Trevelyan (1876-1962) was a British historian and academic, specialising in social history, no doubt influenced by his ties with the Whig and Liberal political parties. His view of history was that the common people had a much more positive effect on historical progress than the royalty or upper echelons of society.Handsomely bound in half calf by Morrell, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Handsomely bound in half calf with cloth covered boards by Morrell, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Externally, very smart, with just a slight bit of fading to the spine and extremities. Internally, front hinge is strained. Remaining binding is firm. A few spots to the endpapers, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
