About This Item

New York: The Modern Library #214, 1967. Reprint of ML #214. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 12mo (7 1/4" x 4 7/8"), yellow cloth with black lettering, Mylar-protected typographic dust jacket (price-clipped) with white lettering on a red field, xviii = 332 pages + [2]. SUPERIOR CONDITION for this major novel about the First World War by E. E. Cummings. Cloth is clean and bright; dust jacket is sharp, price-clipped, and bright. The paper has light uniform age-toning. Toledano's Guide indicates a publication date of between 1967-70 (p.166) and not the copyright date of 1949. Edward Estlin "E. E." Cummings (1894-1962) was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. He wrote approximately 2,900 poems; two autobiographical novels; four plays, and several essays. He is remembered as a clever poet and important author.

Synopsis

In 1917 young Edward Estlin Cummings went to France as a volunteer with a Red Cross ambulance unit on the western front. But his free-spirited, insubordinate ways soon got him tagged as a possible enemy of La Patrie, and he was summarily tossed into a French concentration camp at La Ferte-Mace in Normandy. Under the vilest conditions, Cummings found fulfillment of his ever elusive quest for freedom. The Enormous Room , his account of his four-month confinement, reads like a latter-day Pilgrim's Progress, a journey into dispossession, to a place among the most debased and deprived of human creatures. Cummings's hopeful tone reflects the essential paradox of his existence: to lose everything is to become free, and so to be saved.
