London: John Murray, 1859. New Edition. Leather. Very Good. New edition, 1859. Very Good. 8vo., 343 pp. Bound in full polished calf binding with five raised bands, gilt tooling to spine, gilt school blind stamp (Schola De Barkhamstede) to front board, marbled endpapers and text block edges. Appears to be a prize binding but lacking the normal pastedown inside front cover. Spine is darkened, rubbing along edges and tips. Some foxing, especially to end pages. Still overall a Very Good copy of this early travel guide. Alexander William Kinglake was an English travel writer and historian. He was born near Taunton, Somerset, and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. - Wiki.
