Young lauds the English political tradition: "on political, as well as other subjects, every man is allowed to think for himself, to express, and even to publish his thoughts, without fear of danger; so long as he propagates no opinions subversive of public order and peace." Impelled by the perceived dangers of the French Revolution, he writes on the liberty of the press, Thomas Paine's trial, and the maintenance of both liberty and order.
