London: Macmillan and Co., Limited; New York: The Macmillan Company, 1903. 12mo, xxviii, 377 pp. Full red calf with gilt supralibros and backstrip, marbled edges and endpapers. Hinges rubbed, upper board and backstrip sunned, internally a fine copy with prize book plate of the Royal Masonic School on front pastedown. § A nice little edition of Addison' essays in a prize binding created for the Royal Masonic School for Boys with the school crest and Masonic motto, Audi Vide Tace (Hear, See, Be Silent), on the upper board. The bookplate inside records that the book was given to one H. Booth, Midsummer 1907, for "school work". Even before the school closed in 1977 the Edwardian structure had become a popular filming location for directors seeking creepy and forbidding institutional settings and the building has featured The Avengers, Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the Harry Potter movies. The editor, English historian John Richard Green, has selected over 80 of Addison's essays include those on Sir Roger De Coverley, essays from the Tatler, and numerous more on subjects such as the Court, the country and fashion.
