Description

Philadelphia: H. C. Carey and I. Lea, 1822. Full Leather. Fair. 22.5 x 14 cm. Octavo. lxiv, 463 pages. Worn brown leather. First published in Edinburgh in 1819, this appears to be a first American edition with no additional printings noted. Ex library copy with call sticker on spine and pocket residue inside back cover. Essays with titles such as "Principles of the System of Gall and Spurzheim; and the Objections Made Against it". Fold out chart in rear "The Faculties are Divided Into: which is in 2 pieces. 3 other pages of plates in rear, 2 plates opposite page 187. Previous owner's bookplate inside front cover. The spine label notes this as volume 1, however there is no indication of this in the book. Combe was a leading figure in the phrenology field and co-founder of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820.
