Valuable account, based on all available sources, of warfare, the place of kava, the Arioi society of Tahity, and the sexual life of the natives. This study is profusely illustrated with 10 b/w photographic plates, 2 maps and 7 charts. Some age-wear on binding with lower corners rubbed and slight chipping on head and tail of spine. Hinges starting. The pages containing the Bibliography and Abbreviations (I) have been neatly cut out and are missing (pp. XXVII-XLI). First map missing. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
