About This Item

Press Of El Paso Vocational School, El Paso, Texas, 1935; First Edition, limited to 200 copies; 7 1/4" x 9 1/2", 15 pages. A look at the Texas Republican, first Texas newspaper, published by the James Long expedition at Nacogdoches August 14, 1819, with Horatio Bigelow as editor and Eli Harris printer. The paper carried information regarding the amount of land available and pay offered to anyone volunteering for Long’s army, plus enticing descriptions of Texas life, terrain, wildlife, and natural resources as added incentive. The Republican is perhaps the rarest of newspapers, having apparently gone out of existence before the end of September of the same year. No copy is known to have survived, and all existing excerpts derive solely from segments quoted by other newspapers of the period. Very Good Plus, in illustrated wraps. Clean, crisp, bright, no chips, tears, or soiling, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Authored by distinguished type designer/ historian/ printing bibliographer Douglas C. McMurtrie, who headed the W.P.A.’s American Imprints Inventory, resulting in the preservation of many millions of American literary works by the Library of Congress.
