Ligeti, György. Études pour piano premier livre. Faksimileausgabe / Facsimile edition. Schott: Mainz, London, New York, Tokyo, 1986. A signed, numbered limited edition, this is copy 67 of only 100 copies signed by Ligeti, of an edition of 2,000 printed. Thirty-eight pages of reproduced musical manuscript of six of Ligeti's studies for piano, titled in French: Désordre; Cordes vides; Touches bloquées; Fanfares; Arc-en-ciel; Automne à Varsovie. 33 cm. An illustrated glossy paper front cover has a reproduction of the working score of Désordre, heavily annotated in colored pencil, showing the compositional process of the composer, using polyrhythm to create the sensation of disorder or confusion in the listener. Dedicated to Pierre Boulez, this first etude was almost titled "Pulsation," as the working score annotations reproduced on the cover indicate. György Sándor Ligeti (1923-2006) was born in Transylvania, Romania. Having been deported to a forced labor brigade during the Holocaust, of his family, only he and his mother survived, on her liberation from Auschwitz. Ligeti lived in Hungary until 1956, when he fled in haste to Austria during the Soviet Army's suppression of the 1956 uprising. Ligeti received exposure to a larger world-wide audience when Stanley Kubrick used his extraordinary music in his films, most notably in 2001 A Space Odyssey and The Shining. Other filmmakers used his music, as its inimitable character adds a penetrating dimension to the moving image. Regarded as one of the most innovative and influential composers of classical music, Ligeti extended the literature and technique of the piano with these landmark pieces. Fine.
