About This Item

Toronto: Coach House, 2004. Light rubbing, bumping or shelfwear to wraps. Spine straight and uncreased. Interior tight and unmarked except inscription on title page. Unknown whether this is an author's inscription. It reads "For Bijou, who knows it is not really getting any better," and is signed with a curious (and catching) drawing of two seated stick figures. Is this book a novel? In the blurbs, Samuel R. Delaney calls it a novel, but Charles Bernstein views it as "An exemplary monument for 21st-century poetry." It has chapters like a novel. Each chapter is titled by a vowel, and, amazingly, each chapter uses only that vowel in its text. I notice that it was the winner of the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize, so Delany notwithstanding, I guess it's poetry.. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

'Eunoia', which means 'beautiful thinking', is the shortest word in the English Language to contain all five vowels. This book also contains them all, except that each one appears by itself in its own chapter. A unique personality for each vowel soon emerges: A is courtly, E is elegiac, I is lyrical, O is jocular, U is obsene. Seven years in the making, EUNOIA is a triumphant feat, as playful as it is awe-inspiring.
