New York: Harper and Brothers, 1921. Hardcover. 8vo, gray cloth. [6], 408 pp. First Edition (with code "B-V"). The author's uncommon first book, an account of the state of Europe following World War I. Novelist Zane Grey's copy, with his blind-stamp on the front free endpaper reading "Zane Grey Altadena California." "Roberts went to see how poor old Europe looks and feels today. He tells you about Poland, the short and long Poles, and the barber Poles-the tragedy too. In Hungary he found why Hungarians are the best little one hundred per cent haters of Austrians. In Italy he saw the Italian striking as usual, playing morra as usual, and kissing and making up as usual-and Italy's struggle to come back. Through Europe Roberts went, watching the innocent little fights and rows which the Peace Conference started so that people would not get tired of war too quickly."(Booth Tarkington, from the dust from the dust jacket).
CONDITION: Good, spine lightly faded, fore-edge foxed; dust jacket good, rubbed and moderately soiled, with small losses at head of spine and corners.
