About This Item

Extremely rare revised two volume 1791 edition in excellent condition for its age (the original publication was in 3 volumes). 233 + 259 pages plus several pages of adverts of other books published by Lowndes Co. The covers are in Near Fine condition with very light wear at edges. Binding is tight. We assume the book was rebound at some point. At the end of the novel, page 259 of volume 2, there is a short paragraph entitled "Directions to the Binder". There is moderate to heavy shadowing/toning on the beginning flyleaf and title pages of both volumes; very little foxing or shadowing on the remaining pages. We found no marks, tears, or folds on any of the pages except for a very small piece of writing at the top of the title page, volume 1. Print is clear. There is a small book plate on the second flyleaf page of volume 1. This is a rather famous novel. From Wikipedia (abridged): "Frances Burney (13 June 1752 – 6 January 1840), also known as Fanny Burney and later Madame d'Arblay, was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. In 1786–1790 she held the post as "Keeper of the Robes" to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, George III's queen. In 1793, aged 41, she married a French exile, General Alexandre d'Arblay. After a long writing career and wartime travels that stranded her in France for over a decade, she settled in Bath, England, where she died on 6 January 1840. The first of her four novels, Evelina (1778), was the most successful and remains her most highly regarded. Most of her plays were not performed in her lifetime. She wrote a memoir of her father (1832) and many letters and journals that have been gradually published since 1889." Book will be priority mailed to any domestic address.
