1841 1ed Wimer INDIAN History Costumes Native American TORTURE Mary Rowlandson

James Wimer's 'Events in Indian History' is a collection of various accounts on the Native American Indians. Taken from authors such as S.G Drake and B.B. Thatcher, this work focuses on captives taken by Indians – figures such as Mary Rowlandson, Sarah Gerish, Elizabeth Hanson, Isabella McCoy, and many others.

Wimer also describes the severe torture techniques used by Indians, even though some of them are considered fabricated and even inaccurate. This first edition includes eight impressive illustrations depicting Indian costume and clothing, hunting scenes, battles, and the violent acts of the Indians.

Description:
1597 Poetry of Oppian Greco-Roman FISHING & Hunting Commodus Greek Plantin RARE

Oppian of Anazarbus, or simply Oppian, was a 2nd-century Greek poet who is only remembered for his Greek poems on fishing and hunting. Of his surviving works, his poem on fishing (De piscatu) is his most important, much in part because it was dedicated to Marcus Aurelius and Commodus.

This 1597 edition of the poems of Oppian includes two major poems - the expected poem on fishing and the other on hunting. However, it should be noted that the Oppian named as the author of the hunting poem is Oppian of Syria. According to scholars, Oppian of Syria was familiar with the hunting poem of Oppian of Anazarbus and wrote his poem as a supplement to the former.

Regardless of the authorship, this late 16th-century work is a fascinating and desirable piece on Ancient Roman leisure activities and outdoors sport. Edited and translated with commentary by Konrad Rittershausen, this printing features both Latin and Greek texts in… Read More

1588 1st ed Pliny the Younger Epistles Panegyricus Vesuvius ROME Early ChurchPliny the Younger, one of the most notable 1st-century historians, is best remembered for his written works and orations. His best-known, and still widely popular work is his 'Epistles', which was a series of personal letters to other Roman figures. They give an important view of Roman everyday life as well as an interesting perspective on Pliny's views against Christianity. However, the most important epistles concern Pliny's account of the Mount Vesuvius eruption. Tacitus, a friend of Pliny, wanted to know more about the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, and the eruption itself. This 1588 first edition was published by Jean Richer and includes a dedicatory epistle from Claude MignaultItem number: #9875Price: $599PLINY the YoungerCai Plinii Secundi Novocomensis, Epistolarum libri decem. 1663 ENGLISH History of Ottoman TURKS Empire Sultans Ahmed II Mehmed IV Moore

Andrew Moore's "Compendious History of the Turks" is a rare, 17th-century history of the Ottoman Empire through the mid-1600s. Moore, an English historian, based much of this work on Richard Knolles' "Generall Historie of the Turkes" in which the kings of the Ottoman Empire of described in detail. This particular tome contains descriptions of kings including Mehmet III, Ahmed I, Mustafa I, Osman II, and Ahmed II. Curiously, Moore refers to the Ottoman's in this work as a "barbarous nation, the world's present terror" in hopes of exposing kingdom warring against the Habsburgs in the mid-17th-century.

Description:
1695 Prince Arthur by Blackmore King Arthur FOLIO Glorious Revolution William III

Sir Richard Blackmore, M.D. was a 17th-century English poet who is responsible for a 1695 epic entitled 'Prince Arthur'. This story was Blackmore's retelling of the Glorious Revolution and a celebration of the life and reign of William III. While it tells the tale of the famous King Arthur, whom William III adored, and his defense against the Saxons, it also was greatly influenced by Geoffrey of Monmouth and his 'History of Britain'.

This incredible 1695 edition is the first edition to be published with an index, something the first printing lacked. An impressive folio!

Herbert Thorndike was a 17th-century English churchman who wrote important theological treatises, including his 1642 work 'Of Religious Assemblies'. This book discusses the use of ceremonies within the Church, notes of church reforms, obligations and rules pertaining to clergy, preaching, orders of public service, origins of litanies and liturgical texts, sings Psalms and hymns, and much more. Interestingly, Thorndike did not distinguish between the Catholic or Protestant church, in fact, his views and works helped establish what became known as Anglo-Catholic theology.

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.
