About This Item

1906. Translated from the Original MS. Illustrated by Lester Ralph. London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1906. Original red cloth decorated in green and black. First (American) Edition. Written as Eve's diary in the Garden of Eden, this was a companion volume to EXTRACTS FROM ADAM'S DIARY (1904) -- but actually it is a thinly-veiled tribute to Twain's wife, Livy, who had died in the same month that the earlier book was published. "The theme is simple: without companionship, life has no meaning" [MacDonnell]. Curiously, the publisher's title page imprint reads "London and New York," which in that order was Harper's imprint for English editions; there are no known copies that properly read "New York and London." This copy is remarkably fine, with no soil and little fading; atypically, the white spine lettering has not flaked away at all. McBride p. 220; Blanck 3489.

I am almost a whole day old, now. I arrived yesterday.
