About This Item

London: Gaberbocchus Press Ltd, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Very Good+. S. T. [Stefan Themerson]. 12mo. Pp.198. Translated by Barbara Wright. Yellow cloth, titles stamped in red on the spine. Leaf edges mildly age toned and transfer to endpapers, mild spine sag and stains to lower edge. In the photo illustrated dust jacket printed in red and black with price 18/- intact on the front flap. Jacket spine and edges a trifle darkened, light edge-wear. A humorous experiment in fiction, the story of a confrontation in a Paris bus told in 99 different ways. And a masterful transformation into English: Queneau had encouraged Barbara Wright to take on this "impossible" translation full of French puns, idioms and greater challenges. She also provides an insightful, witty preface. With chapter initial drawings and jacket design by "S. T." (publisher Stefan Themerson). Gaberbocchus specialized in such experiments in language with complimentary design. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.

Synopsis

Exercises in Style, written by Raymond Queneau, is a collection of 99 retellings of the same story, each in a different style. In each, the narrator gets on the "S" bus (now no. 84), witnesses an altercation between a man with a long neck and funny hat and another passenger, and then sees the same person two hours later at the Gare St-Lazare getting advice on adding a button to his overcoat.
