Cover artwork by Kate Allen. ; 192 pages; This was supposed to be a book about a small, badly designed deer that was hunted to the edge of extinction in its native China by the nineteenth century and only survived in posh parks and Western zoos. The Chinese know it as Milu, but in the West its called Pere David's deer. But the more the author tried to write the fascinating tale of missionaries, emperors and unreasonably cute, rare animals, the more he got distracted by other fascinating subjects. Including the existence of The Extinction Club, a band of maniacs who try to finish off endangered species - personally... .
